Memorial Day

I guess “Happy Memorial Day” is not really what I should say since this is our holiday to remember those who died while serving our country. So, I will say a big Thank You to those that did. And for those who are currently serving, I sincerely hope that you come home safe and sound. God bless you all!

Savannah – Where I lost my Aunt! Part 2

Saturday morning we got up and Chris took us to the Bamboo Farm & Coastal Gardens where she volunteers. We missed the camelias, irises (there were just a couple still in bloom) and roses blooming. But found a few other things.

This is where we lost Aunt Alline. I’m not sure if she was taste testing or shopping, or both. I heard she went to the sample table several times! She said she was shopping for others and came out with a big bag. OK, we didn’t really lose Aunt Alline, but it seems like she was in the candy store for a long time.

Heading up from River Street up to where the car was parked, I saw this. I’m not sure if these were tunnels or what and didn’t go look as the elevator was calling. But I thought it was pretty neat (old)!

We next headed to Tybee Island. I had never been to Tybee and enjoyed it. Aunt Alline and Sue climbed to the top of the lighthouse while Chris and I walked over to the beach.

I had a great time with Sue, Aunt Alline and Chris. I would really like to go back and visit Savannah again, but it will have to be during cooler weather.

Savannah – Where I lost my Aunt!

Last Friday my cousin Sue, my Aunt Alline and I headed to Savannah to visit my sister-in-law Chris. We were looking forward to a road trip and decided to get off of I16 south of Macon. Sue drove her truck since she has a cover for the back and the forecast was calling for rain. It did rain some as we were driving through Atlanta but then cleared up. Before we got out of Macon we stopped at the Cracker Barrel for lunch. I think that might have been the second time I’ve eaten there. I know that a lot of people like Cracker Barrel, but I’m just not a fan. We then drove a bit south and got off of I16. While driving south on Hwy. 15/29, we went through Tarrytown. As we did we saw this really cool old Coca Cola sign on the side of an old post office. We had gone on by and Sue decided we really needed to go back to take some pictures.

Here’s the back of this building–also pretty cool looking.

And then we came up to this windmill. None of us had ever seen a windmill with the water tank like this.

We finally arrived at Chris’ house around 4:30 and after a potty break we headed over to see Kim, Joe, Max and Ali. While there, Max had to show me his sunflower:

Isn’t Max the cutest little guy you’ve ever seen? Sue got some love from Ali:

And Max had to get some love from his Nammy–or was it Nammy getting love from Max?

Well, well, well…..

One thing about being in the mountains during a thunderstorm–you feel it up close and personal! I can attest to that because we had storms come through Saturday afternoon and night. The thunder and lightning was closer than I’d have liked. We thought we’d come through the storms all right until Sunday afternoon. The water pressure kept dropping. As we normally get sand and grit in the faucets from being on a well, we kept thinking there was a bunch of junk in them. Nope! Tommy finally found the name of the company who had put in our well initially and gave them a call. This was Sunday evening. Monday morning they called and came out to check out the system. After the guy told us that we’d have to replace the well pump and the pipes we drove to town to stock up on water. Can I just state that it’s really no fun not having running water for 48 hours. :( But the guys showed up this morning about 9:00 and spent a couple of hours replacing the pump and pipes. Everything is flowing again and the shower felt wonderful!

This is why I put up with no running water:

The sky yesterday afternoon was simply spectacular. I kept telling Tommy that we should go up to the Parkway for the sunset. He was in no mood since he’d been stewing about how much the pump and pipes were going to cost. So we just sat here and enjoyed.

Golden Ragwort:

I love how these ferns unfurl. It looks like they’re covered in fuzz until fully open.

5:30 a.m.

Four mornings I’ve set the alarm for 5:30 so that we could go up to the Blue Ridge Parkway to take some sunrise pictures. Four mornings I’ve been disappointed—either no clouds whatsoever or so cloudy I couldn’t see the mountains from our house. I need something between the two extremes. But getting up that early gives me a good reason for taking a nap in the afternoon. :)

After Bubba and Tommy went for a walk and we all had breakfast, we decided to go ahead for a drive on the parkway. It was a very hazy morning so I did not get any good pictures.

This is Daisy Fleabane that was blooming all up and down the Parkway. This plant was once used to repel fleas.

When we got back home we hiked up to the top of the trail behind us to take pictures of some Flame (or Native) Azalea. As I was taking pictures there we heard some thunder and decided to head quickly back down to the house. We got rained on a little but soon after we got back to the house, the thunder really started booming.

Americana – 2nd Place

My photography club’s monthly competition was held last night. The topic for the month was Americana. We may use pictures taken up to two years ago so I searched through my older pictures and found a rodeo shot from the last time we went to the “Big Daddy of em All” in Cheyenne.

This shot is actually pretty funny to me. You can’t see the “used-to-be” rider anywhere. And if you look at the people in the stands you can see a guy looking at his beer bottle, a lady talking on her cell phone, and a couple of people taking pictures.

I got a 2nd place ribbon for this photo! Yippee!
